Overview: The theory and guidelines of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED), pronounced ‘sep-ted’, were first created in the 1960s; and like everything else, it evolved into what it is today. CPTED is a well-established and well-researched field of crime prevention utilized internationally. It has proven methods that increase the responsible, positive use of property while decreasing the likelihood of criminal behavior.
CPTED includes physical and social management and law enforcement recommendations that seek to affect positive human behavior as people interact with their environment. The environment is inclusive of the people, their physical, and social surroundings, and how people behave and act.
